HISTORY: The custom of carving Love Spoons originated in Wales centuries ago. As well as giving gifts of sweets and cakes, young men would carve an unique lovespoon for the object of their desire, with symbols of love. As we are surrounded today by cheap mass-produced material goods, it is hard for us to imagine the importance that was given centuries ago to the making and giving of such tokens of affection. SYMBOLS: Traditionally, every effort was made to carve the love spoon out of a single piece of wood without any breaks or joins, and despite the obvious difficulties some remarkable work was achieved. This was particularly evident in the form of chains, links, 'balls in cages' and knotwork. Over the years, many more symbols have been used with love spoons becoming more elaborate and decorative over the centuries. View the meanings of the most popular Symbols here

CARVERS: Cadwyn's range of welsh lovespoons are hand carved in the south Wales valleys by a team of carvers, led by Paul Curtis. Paul discovered his love and talent for woodcarving when he was very young, and was taught the craft of Love Spoon carving by Gwyndaf Breeze, who is regarded as the greatest authority on the tradition of carving Welsh Love Spoons in Wales today. According to Gwyndaf, although the tradition of carving lovespoons is not unique to Wales, the quality of those produced here is among the best in the world, and the development of the spoon from a common kitchen utensil to the intricately carved design is an uniquely Welsh phenomenon.
