Caring for Your Welsh Tapestry Throw (Carthen)

Our Rock Mill Welsh wool blankets are woven from 100% Welsh wool at the last surviving water-powered woollen mill in Wales, nestled in the beautiful Teifi Valley. Combining generations of traditional craftsmanship with timeless Welsh tapestry designs, each blanket is made to provide warmth, comfort and lasting quality. With the proper care, your Welsh wool blanket can be enjoyed for many years and even passed down through future generations.

Washing

Pure wool is naturally resistant to dirt and odours, so your blanket should not need frequent washing. In most cases, simply give it a good shake outdoors and hang it outside occasionally to air and freshen.

If a spill occurs, treat it as soon as possible by gently dabbing the area with lukewarm water and a mild wool detergent. Avoid rubbing the fibres, as this can damage the wool. Instead, blot the stain until clean.

When a full wash is required:

  • Use a cold or cool hand wash or wool cycle.

  • Choose a detergent specifically designed for wool.

  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach or biological detergents.

  • Wash the blanket separately to prevent it catching on zips, buttons or other fabrics.

Drying

Never tumble dry a Welsh wool blanket, as heat can cause the wool to shrink and felt.

Avoid wringing or twisting the blanket, as this may stretch it out of shape. A gentle spin cycle can be used to remove excess water before drying.

Hang the blanket so its weight is evenly supported, or dry it flat if possible. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this may gradually fade the colours.

Protecting Against Moths

As with all natural wool products, moths can occasionally be a problem.

Before storing your blanket, make sure it is completely clean and dry. Store it in a sealed bag or airtight container to help protect it from moths. Cedarwood products or suitable moth repellents can also provide extra protection.

Regular airing and occasional inspection will help keep your Welsh wool blanket in excellent condition for years to come.
